Seeking to encourage innovation and advancement in the essential, yet often unheralded, field of tribology and lubrication, CRC Press and the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) announced a new agreement that will extend cooperation between the two organizations beyond the printed page and into cyberspace. Building on a relationship that produced the landmark Handbook of Tribology, representatives from both groups finalized a unique arrangement that, in addition to including more co-publication endeavors, will allow individual STLE members exceptionally affordable subscriptions to TRIBOLOGYnetBASE, CRC’s state-of-the-art online reference and resource library.
According to John Lavender, Senior Vice-President at CRC Press-Taylor &Francis, this marks the first time that single-user pricing has been offered to individuals on any of CRC’s powerful Netbase products. Exceptionally sophisticated and comprehensive, the sites are designed to provide libraries,corporations, and institutions with multi-user access to the world’s most authoritative resources and reference material.
The agreement, which was finalized in a meeting this month at CRC’s corporate headquarters in Boca Raton, Florida, states that individual subscriptions must be purchased directly through STLE. CRC also agreed to offer STLE’s corporate and institutional members a discount to TRIBOLOGYnetBASE,as well as free trials to many of CRCnetBASE’s online libraries,including those devoted to engineering, chemistry, materials and polymers.
“It’s a natural partnership” said Lavender. “The engineers and technicians at STLE are very loyal book customers. They are also great innovators whose creativity is helping to support and advance industrial production worldwide. However, as it’s a relatively new field, we recognize that the best and the most innovative engineers and technicians often work independently, and consequently, are unable to access our Netbase through traditional avenues. As a way to show our support for their spirit and appreciation for their patronage, we wanted to make it as easy as possible for them to access our Netbase from wherever they work.
“Making systems efficient and creating wholes that are greater than the sums of their parts is what defines the science of tribology” said Lavender, “It is also what defines this partnership between two institutions that have served the field since its inception”.
STLE Director Ed Salek was equally pleased with the outcome of the meeting.“Those working in this field don’t often get the recognition and support they deserve. The partnership with Taylor & Francis, both on Netbase and other projects, provides our international organization with added visibility, while also directly helping those individual professionals STLE serves”.
On the print front, CRC and STLE will be co-publishing several books,including the newest edition of the Handbook of Lubrication and Tribology. To further encourage innovative thinking, the two organizations also discussed plans to jointly offer annual awards for publishing contributions that advance the field.
