Government aid to UK firms seeking export business is among the most generous in the world — as this country‐by‐country survey shows. So why isn't Britain better placed in the export league? John Lawless suggests that some of the taxpayers' money is going to firms who haven't a hope of clinching overseas orders. But, more important, industry still lacks the productive capability needed to meet export demand.
