The Business Graduates Association (BGA) launched Enterprise and Achievement Awards to students, or graduate MBAs, in 1986, whose entrepreneurial actions and achievements, in either the public or private sector, have demonstrated excellence and continuing concern for the changing needs of society. No more than lip‐service has been paid to the need for an entrepreneurial approach to creating jobs and growth in British industry. Venture capital companies report an acute shortage of good projects where a sound business idea is supported by competent management. The BGA suspects that many entrepreneurs are not recognised by their companies and are channelled into less rewarding directions. The BGA hopes to change the British attitude towards entrepreneurs, recognising that potential successful entrepreneurs may fail two or three times before they finally succeed.
