Exper t systems are used to solve problems by drawing on human knowledge and experience. They are used currently in areas such as medicine and finance. A three‐part framework is put forward for identifying, evaluating and developing the opportunities for setting up an expert system. This involves evaluating the strategic and economic benefits along with the problem/application and organisational factors. The real value of an expert system's application is in the strategic advantage it can provide, therefore timely development is critical.
