Gives brief examples of UK design excellence to demonstrate how well the UK can design products for world markets. However, the Design Council believes that in many cases UK business and industry do not make the best use of design and innovation to differentiate themselves in world markets. Explains some of the barriers to realizing the potential of design and its impact on a company’s competitiveness. Gives examples of how the Design Council is working with several academic institutions to build a body of new knowledge which will enable design to be managed more effectively. The Design Council will develop practical tools, based on this research, which can be used by business to improve performance.
