Purpose

The research aimed to examine the information needs of vegetable farmers across seasons regarding indigenous and information communication technology (ICT) communication channels utilized as agricultural information sources in Haramaya and Kombolcha Woredas, Ethiopia.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed a multi-stage sampling method to select a total of 385 farmers. Data were collected through structured interview schedules, focus group discussions and key informant interviews. To analyze the collected data, descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, chi-square tests, independent sample T-test, the information need index and thematic analysis were utilized.

Findings

The study indicates that vegetable farmers have a primary need for information on better seeds, market prices, inorganic fertilizers, pest and disease management, sales locations, market days, access to loans/credit, proper harvesting methods, organic fertilizers, market requirements, irrigation, farm labor, proper packaging and marketing challenges. Farmers use a combination of communication channels, with friends and mobile phones being the top choices across all production seasons. The sources of market price information include middlemen, friends, neighbors, extension agents, mobile phones, wholesalers, and radio.

Research limitations/implications

The study is restricted only to Indigenous and ICT communication channels (radio, TV and mobile phone); other communication tools were not included.

Originality/value

The study’s findings are utilized by policymakers, researchers, government agencies, farmers and nongovernmental organizations regarding the information needs of vegetable producers and their preferred communication channels utilized as agricultural information sources in Ethiopia.
