This paper celebrates the 250th anniversary of the construction of the William Edwards arch bridge at Pontypridd. The single-span stone masonry arch has been the subject of a number of methods of analysis over its rich history and this paper looks at the significant contribution made by George Snell to the analysis of masonry arch bridges and his application of the procedure to this important structure.
