With the excitement and enthusiasm often encountered when starting work on a new design commission for a moving bridge, the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic equipment associated with operating the bridge can get overlooked at the outset, meaning that the project as a whole suffers further down the line. Issues such as the space allocated for the mechanism, life of equipment, location of gates and barriers often get overlooked at the start of a project and then have to be addressed in a less than ideal way later. This paper discusses some of the key issues that require addressing both at the early conceptual stages but also as the project develops and key details and decisions are made that can determine the success of the project as a whole. It goes on to look at the considerations needed during installation, commissioning and handover.
