The de-industrialisation discourse and the loss of modern industrial heritage in the Arab world: Jordan as a case study

Nedhal Jarrar is a professional architect, academic, and open-source activist with experience in cultural heritage, conservation, documentation, and digitization projects. He is teaching at the School of Built Environment Engineering, Al-Hussein Technical University in Amman, Jordan as a part-time lecturer. He has previous experience working in multiple engineering industries, particularly tensile membrane structures and construction restoration chemicals in several countries in the Middle East. He worked with some high-profile foundations and international organizations, including UNESCO, DAAD, and Gerda Henkel. He is a fellow of the American Center of Research (ACOR) for his research on modern industrial heritage in Jordan. He recently joined some of the international organizations concerned with heritage, such as TICCIH and ICOMOS-Jordan as a member.

Nedhal holds a master’s degree in Architectural Conservation from the German Jordanian University in Amman, and a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the Applied Science University. Currently, He is on his PhD research proposal.

Dr Suha Jaradat is Head of Construction and Surveying and Associate Professor at the School of Engineering and the Built Environment, Edinborough Napier University, and Programme Leader for Architectural Technology. Dr Jaradat leads the strategic development and delivery of a suite of postgraduate, undergraduate and graduate apprenticeship programmes in a wide range of built environment disciplines. Dr Jaradat is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), Chartered Architectural Technologist and Fellow of the Institute (FCIAT), which is a status based on demonstrating a significant contribution to and excellence in architectural technology.

Dr Jaradat is involved in research, teaching, and professional practice. Dr Jaradat completed her MSc in Design and Digital Media at the Department of Architecture, The University of Edinburgh and worked as a Research Fellow and Sessional Lecturer at the University of Reading, School of Construction Management and Engineering after completing her PhD at the Design Innovation Research Centre (DIRC), University of Reading.
