Research/Outstanding Universal Value, World Heritage cities and Sustainability

This is the shortened title of an innovative, collaborative and comparative research programme by Eindhoven University ofTechnology (the Netherlands) and UNESCO's World Heritage Centre (France). The main aim is to survey the relationship betweenOutstanding Universal Value assessment practices and the sustainable development of World Heritage cities. Results are expectedto make a significant contribution to both research and practice on World Heritage management and sustainable development.Research shall benefit from the cross-fertilisation of these two knowledge fields in an effort to bridge them. Practice willbenefit from the exchange of knowledge, and an increased procedural transparency and quality in decision-making processes.

Education/MA Cultural Heritage Management and Sustainable Development(CHMSD)

This is a pioneer post-graduate programme which will start in the 2011/2012 academic year at the Institute for Social andEuropean Studies (ISES), in Corvinus University Budapest, Hungary. It offers a post-graduate opportunity for students or professionalsinterested in gaining management skills on different cultural heritage organizations and entrepreneurships, focusing on fundamentalmanagerial knowledge and fomenting "a strong interdisciplinary approach while meeting the requirements of sustainable development".

The CHMSD programme currently offers the following specializations: Theory of Cultural Heritage, Museum and Heritage Collection,and Cultural Heritage Management. The development of this programme is supported by Norwegian Grants.

Training/First Aid to Cultural Heritage in Times of Conflict – 2011

This is an international training course of five days (26 September to 28 October 2011) organized by the International Centrefor the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) in cooperation with UNESCO, Blue Shield Networkand specialized international and national agencies;with the financial support of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritageand Activities (MiBAC). The programme of the course includes interactive lectures,group activities, practical sessions, simulations,site visits, and case studies. The participants will be challenged to develop case studies, drawn from their own experience,and/or professional context.

Network/URBACT

URBACT is a European exchange and learning programme that promotes sustainable urban development. Besides enabling citiesto work together towards more sustainable solutions for their major urban challenges, URBACT also reaffirms its key role inchannelling increasingly complex societal changes. URBACT enables cities to share good practices and lessons learned withall professionals involved in European urban policy. Projects focus on specific urban issues, such as the one taking builtheritage into account in urban development (Hero). URBACT is jointly financed by the European Union (European Regional DevelopmentFund) and its member states. The third call for proposals is expected by the end of 2011.

Awards/Ballaarat Mechanics Institute Awarded by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation

A UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Culture Heritage Conservation was presented to the Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute,Australia recognising the excellence of its restoration project; "combining the new and the old to great effect, giving moderndetail but maintaining the original atmosphere of the building" (Norris). The 1859 building has undergone extensive refurbishmentssince 2001 with its verandah, former cinema and numerous other rooms restored, and some new facilities installed, such asa lift and modern shelving.

Awards/Five Projects receive 2010 Aga Khan Award and Oleg Grabar receives the Chairman's Award

The five projects selected for the 2010 Aga Khan Award for Architecture were presented at a ceremony held at the Museum ofIslamic Art, in Doha, Qatar, on 24 November 2010. His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani the Emir of Qatar and HerHighness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser joined His Highness the Aga Khan in presiding the ceremony. The awarded five projects werethe following: Wadi Hanifa Wetlands, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Revitalisation of the Hypercentre of Tunis,Tunisia; Madinat Al-ZahraMuseum, Cordoba, Spain; Ipekyol Textile Factory,Edirne, Turkey and Bridge School, Xiashi, Fujian, China. At the award ceremony,Professor Oleg Grabar received the Chairman's Award in recognition of his lifetime contribution to the field of Islamic artand architecture.
