Welcome to this special issue of Civil Engineering, the general journal of Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers. It is the first of two special issues which are intended to provide an overview of the planning, design and construction of Hong Kong's new international airport at Chek Lap Kok and its associated road and rail links. The £12 billion project was completed in July this year on time and within budget and is a testament to Sino-British cooperation.
