Over the last 20 years the concept of automating construction and civil engineering operations has become a reality within Japan, resulting in improvements in site safety, efficiency and productivity. Examples renewed in this paper include concrete finishing, material handling, earthworks and integrated construction automation systems. However, the paper concludes that construction environments need to be much more structured and controlled before construction robots can really start to take over.
