Springfield is a new town being built south-west of Brisbane, Australia to accommodate Queensland's fast-growing population. A road and rail transportation corridor has been developed to service this and other new residential communities in the region. This paper describes the design development of the final 10 km stage of the Springfield rail link, which was delivered at the end of 2013 using an innovative ‘competitive alliance’. As reported, significant benefits and value for money were achieved for both for the client and state government using this procurement route.
