Building information modelling (BIM) has been used extensively on the Corrib onshore gas pipeline project in Ireland. The complex project involved a wide range of specialist environmental, engineering and legal expertise. Spatial datasets were integrated and several data-acquisition techniques were used to create a digital terrain model. A three-dimensional ‘single integrated model' was then developed which proved to be an invaluable resource during the planning, design and construction of the tunnelling compound. The project serves as benchmark for the benefits of using BIM in infrastructure projects.
