Concrete durability
Thomas Dyer has produced a well-written technical reference on the durability of concrete. It covers various topics, from material deterioration to design approaches, and includes detailed flow charts for designing durable concrete according to the British specifications.
Surface and cathodic protection methods are covered along with repair methods such as moisture control, strengthening, resistivity and anodic area control.
In summary, this book provides practical knowledge along with substantial technical depth, and I recommend it for practitioners, researchers and graduate students.
Reinforced concrete design to Eurocodes: design theory and examples (4th edition)
It is 8 years since the popular third edition of this guide was published in 2006. The fourth edition includes new examples of Eurocode rules, revisions to punching shear in slabs, worked examples of strut-and-tie design and coverage of new cements.
Numerous worked examples provide ample opportunity for readers to master the material and further their understanding of the topic, supported by commentary, illustrations and background to the Eurocodes.
This is an essential reference that summarises Eurocode design of reinforced concrete, provides background to key clauses and detailed step-by-step worked examples. It is an exemplary text for students and practising engineers alike.
Decisive: how to make better choices in life and work
Decisive discusses decision making where gut instinct, or previous experience, is unlikely to be of great value in determining the best way to proceed.
It outlines a structured approach to thinking about a problem, defining a range of possibilities, developing options and choosing a solution. Iterative as well as one-off decisions are discussed, along with ways of setting limits and boundaries to test the validity of the decision and when best to abandon a failing decision. A range of problems from design through to product liability are used to illustrate the approach.
The book's subtitle may alienate the serious reader but this would be a mistake. It won the ‘practical manager' category of this year's Chartered Management Institute management book of the year competition. I recommend it to all engineers.
