Advancing coastal engineering
In September this year ICE held the eleventh conference of its breakwaters series, entitled ‘Coasts, marine structures and breakwaters 2017’. The call for papers attracted outstanding submissions from around the globe and the top 130 were selected for presentation at the event in Liverpool, UK following rigorous peer review.
The five-day conference programme covered a wide range of topics including shoreline structures, coastal processes, design and construction of breakwaters and related structures, and marine energy.
Speakers included experts from Arup, Cowi, the UK Environment Agency, Imperial College London, the University of Tokyo, National Research Council Canada and the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center.
Since launching in 1982, our breakwaters series has become one of the most respected international conferences on maritime and coastal civil engineering. Its authors and delegates have shaped the marine engineering sector by unveiling innovative technologies, assessing techniques, making formal recommendations and providing in-depth technical analyses.

Conference outcomes have translated into guidance documents and manuals, defining industry standard practice.
Providing career support
With record numbers of experienced professionals seeking ICE membership, our membership teams are evolving new ways of supporting those seeking professional recognition. These include our highly successful career appraisal workshops programme.
The fast-track workshops are open to all those who have the appropriate academic base and have the experience necessary to progress towards either incorporated or chartered engineer status, but have not had the benefit of a structured training agreement.

Delivered by our experienced teams across the UK, the programme is now expanding internationally. The workshops guide delegates through to completing their ICE application and are timed to allow applicants, if successful, to move onto the next appropriate professional review session.
If you are interested in attending a fast-track career appraisal workshop, please see www.ice.org.uk/membership or contact membershiprecruitment@ice.org.uk.
We are also continuing to emphasise a whole-life-learning approach, providing ongoing support to members throughout their careers. Members can access career guidance, supporting continuing professional development packages and technical training programmes.
The ICE library and reference services can be accessed online and/or by phone and email from anywhere in the world. Please note that the library service is for all members, including graduates and students doing dissertation research.
Promoting international development
ICE is holding a free conference on civil engineering in the developing world on 17 October 2017 at its headquarters in London, UK. Entitled ‘Engineers for international development’, the event will introduce graduates, academics, professional engineers, non-government offices and funders to the opportunities and challenges of working in international development.

Delegates will find out more about the demand for civil engineering in the developing world; learn how to meet the needs of international organisations; learn about the work opportunities and projects available with non-government offices; and hear first-hand experiences from the field. Speakers include representatives from Engineers without Borders and Oxfam.
The Happold Foundation will then run a four-hour afternoon workshop that will address some of the issues raised during the morning session and explore how engineers can best offer support in the international development sector.
