Horizontal directional coring is an advanced ground investigation technique which can provide continuous core sampling along a non-linear trajectory, which makes it particularly useful for tunnelling projects. It has been used successfully on several tunnel ground investigations in Hong Kong, with over 15 km of directional cores drilled in the last 10 years. This paper summarises the development of horizontal directional coring techniques and discusses the valuable experience gained and lessons learned from projects in Hong Kong.
