The experiences of young offenders (aged 18–21) on protection in an Irish prison: using an interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) Available to Purchase

Suzanne Hughes is based at the Department of Counselling Psychology, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. She completed her MSc in applied psychology in Trinity College, Dublin in 2018, and currently works as a Research Assistant in the Counselling Psychology Department. She gained her BA (Honours) degree in psychology from Dublin Business School. Previously, she has worked as a Research Assistant in Dublin City University and an Assistant Psychologist in Primary Care Psychology, Health Service Executive Ireland, and the Irish Prison Service. Her research to date includes: infidelity, dementia, young offenders and the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy and emotion-focused therapy for the treatment of generalised anxiety disorder. Suzanne is also a graduate member of the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) and has previously published articles and presented at the PSI annual conferences 2013 and 2016. She is due to commence her doctorate in clinical psychology at the University of Limerick in September 2019.

Timothy James Trimble is based at the Department of Psychology, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. He is a Professor in applied psychology and Course Director of the MSc in applied psychology at Trinity College Dublin. He is a Chartered Psychologist and an expert in forensic mental health assessment. His current funded research (IRC) is on suicide risk and resilience. These competencies and skills are drawn upon regularly in his role as Junior Dean, as well as in a range of consultancy and related projects. His forensic psychology experience also included working with the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland and Serious and Organised Crime Agency. His current research is in collaboration with the Probation Service Northern Ireland (PBNI) and Ireland and Police Service of Ireland and Northern Ireland, evaluating techniques for sex-offender risk assessment. Research with PBNI also includes evaluating a range of offender management programmes for offenders in the community.

Anne O’Rourke is based at Adult Mental Health, St James’ Hospital Dublin, Dublin, Ireland. She is a Principal Clinical Psychologist in Adult Mental Health in St James’ Hospital/Dublin South Central. She has previously worked as a Senior Clinical Psychologist in Mountjoy Prison, Irish Prison Service from 2003 to 2018. She gained her BA (Honours) degree in psychology and Doctorate in clinical psychology from Trinity College, Dublin. She was a member of the Board of Care After Prison, a voluntary organisation, from 2011 to 2015. She is also a graduate member of PSI.
