This paper describes work done in the University of Bradford to give instruction to readers in the use of the library and the use of subject literature, with particular reference to undergraduate and postgraduate students. A first‐year course includes general introduction, arrangement of stock, and content of catalogues. A more advanced course in the second or third year concentrates on the bibliographical tools within the students' own subjects, and demonstrates the principles of literature searching. Practical work is an essential adjunct to this course. The teaching is examined critically and several weaknesses are noted. The appropriateness of the librarian to conduct these courses is justified.
