This paper aims to develop a comprehensive taxonomy of context in human information behavior (HIB) by synthesizing interdisciplinary perspectives to address fragmented definitions and applications of context in research.
The study employs qualitative content analysis of seminal works, including Dervin’s Sense-Making and Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process, to categorize contextual factors into seven dimensions. The methodology aligns with design science, utilizing iterative coding and thematic analysis.
The taxonomy identifies seven core dimensions of context – personal, social, environmental, temporal, task, technological and situational – highlighting their dynamic interplay in shaping information behavior.
The taxonomy’s theoretical nature necessitates empirical validation to test its applicability across diverse settings.
The framework informs the design of adaptive, equitable information systems, such as emotion-aware interfaces and privacy-by-default platforms.
By systematizing context, the taxonomy promotes inclusive systems that address the fluidity of human information needs across cultures and communities.
