Purpose

This study aims to address challenges in cross-domain resource discovery within the cultural heritage sector. It proposes the development of a taxonomy that connects cultural heritage resources across diverse institutional memory collections at a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Design/methodology/approach

A taxonomy named “Pusako Ombilin” was developed using 445 unique Indonesian terms to support the cultural heritage network of the Ombilin Coal Mining Heritage of Sawahlunto (OCMHS). Terms were collected from internal documentation and external references to establish a unified knowledge organization system. The taxonomy was then analyzed to evaluate its benefits and limitations in a cultural heritage network context.

Findings

The development process revealed that integrating terms from varied sources is effective for building a taxonomy that bridges institutional silos. “Pusako Ombilin” provides a unified overview of cultural heritage resources across OCMHS memory institutions regardless of their origin.

Originality/value

While no existing knowledge organization system meets all the needs of cultural networks, this taxonomy integrates principles from aspectual classification and ontology mapping. The resulting framework offers valuable insights for memory institutions seeking standardized documentation practices and improved cross-domain access to cultural heritage resources.
