This study aims to examine Digital Darwinism within academic libraries, focusing on institutional adaptation to technological evolution and changing user expectations. It seeks to identify disruptive forces, analyze strategic responses and develop the Academic Library Evolutionary Advancement (ALEA) framework to guide libraries in proactively managing digital transformation while upholding their fundamental values.
The paper utilizes a literature review and an analysis of current practices to examine Digital Darwinism in academic libraries. Adopting a conceptual approach, it synthesizes insights from scholarly materials, industry reports and digital resources to understand disruptive forces and adaptive strategies.
Digital Darwinism compels profound transformation in academic libraries, requiring integrated strategies. The central contribution is the four-pillar ALEA framework. This conceptual model provides a structured approach to guide libraries through digital evolution via adaptive resources, personalized experiences, empowered staff and sustainable funding.
This paper’s originality lies in the ALEA framework, a comprehensive, integrated model addressing Digital Darwinism, specifically within academic libraries. It moves beyond standard digitization approaches by synthesizing technology, user behavior and librarian competencies. It offers significant value by providing a theoretical basis and a practical, adaptable guide for library decision-makers to proactively manage transformation, maintain core values and ensure future relevance.
