Welcome to the second issue of 2019.
This issue includes the write up of the Binnie Lecture from the 20th Biennial BDS conference in 2018. The article explores the role of inspection and monitoring in risk and asset management.
We would like to remind our readers that we welcome comment and discussion on our published papers. If you would like to provide any discussion on the papers included in this issue, or previous issues, please email the editor.
We are currently looking for articles for our 2019 editions. Please could I request that our readership continue to highlight topics and schemes that they think would be of interest to the wider readership and contact the editor with a proposed title or subject in the first instance. Please note that our editorial panel are on hand to provide mentoring and guidance in preparation of papers, should you require.
The deadlines to receive articles, including technical papers, discussion pieces and case studies for volume 29 of the Journal are as follows.
Issue 4: 30th July 2019, special edition (see below for further details).
At times we receive interesting papers, which we would like to publish, but due to their length or complexity are not suitable for publishing in the hard copy of our Journal. In these instances the papers are still available online for readers to peruse. Please also note that articles are available online in advance of being published in the hard copy of our Journal (https://www.icevirtuallibrary.com/toc/jdare/0/0), so it is always a good idea to check the Journal online to keep up to date with recent developments in our industry.
Forthcoming special edition: call for articles
The fourth issue of the Dams and Reservoir journal 2019 will be a special edition covering our digital agenda, including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and automation. During the most recent British Dam Society Conference in Swansea, a workshop was held to discuss CFD modelling and its application to the dams industry. The workshop gave an opportunity for a number of CFD practitioners to demonstrate the state of play and encouraged discussion on the challenges in application of this tool to the dams industry. The majority of the attendees were not CFD practitioners and it was highlighted that there has been a lack of guidance for specifying and reviewing CFD modelling.
To fill this need, the facilitators of the workshop intend to work with the editorial team of the journal to provide further guidance to dam engineers. We intend to cover best practice workflows, specifying modelling work, expected outcomes and some general discussion. If you would like to provide input or would be keen to collaborate we would be glad to hear from you. We are also asking for further interesting articles and case studies to include in this special issue. If you would like to contribute, please contact the editor. The deadline for all contributions to the special issue is the 30th July 2019.
Notice of Elections of New Members to the ICE Reservoirs Committee
Applications are requested for a forthcoming vacancy on the Reservoirs Committee. From the October 2019 meeting the Committee will be appointing 1 Supervising Engineer and 2 All Reservoirs Panel Engineers to the Committee.
The appointees will serve a term of three years, or shorter if determined by the Committee. Applications shall be submitted in writing to the secretary of the Committee, (Carol Brooks, Institution of Civil Engineers – e-mail carol.brooks@ice.org.uk), by 31st July 2019. Applicants must include a brief statement (200 words) on their suitability for appointment. All applicants shall have their employer's approval to serve on the Committee, if appointed.
ICE wants to see diversity in the membership of its committees, so applications from groups that are currently under-represented on the Committee (women and ethnic minorities) would be particularly welcome.
The Committee meets 3 times per year, with an additional requirement of 3 interviewing days, plus time spent assessing applications for appointment to Engineer panels. Travel expenses are reimbursed by the ICE.
Where there are more applications than vacancies, appointee(s) will be selected by the Reservoirs Committee. Details of the selection process may be obtained from the secretary.
