This paper describes the development of some geotechnical approaches to the assessment of embankment dams since the introduction of the Reservoirs Act in 1975. The initial developments took place in response to a number of industry-led initiatives instigated with UK government support leading up to and following the implementation of the Act. The approaches primarily relate to seismic and slope stability and internal erosion risks. A timeline mapping the evolution of approaches and best practices is presented.
