This paper is an account of the preconference tour of the 19th Biennial BDS Conference 2016. The tour was hosted by the Environment Agency, and took us on a visit to Garstang and Catterall flood storage reservoirs which form part of the flood management system for the River Wyre, Lancashire. Both reservoirs have embankment dams with substantial concrete control structures housing fish belly gates.
