The fourth edition of flood and reservoir safety (FRS4) published in 2015 included the change that where an existing dam failed to meet the defined engineering standard, then a risk-based approach could be used as an aid to assessing the value (cost against reduction in risk) of undertaking works to meet the standard, or the extent of works required, if any, to reduce risk to ‘as low as reasonably practicable’. This paper summarises the key aspects of a case history with a risk-based approach to assessing the adequacy of freeboard, which was presented at the FRS workshop at the BDS conference at Swansea.
