Asphaltic or bituminous materials have been in common use for dam engineering applications around the world for many decades yet the application of such materials in the UK is relatively rare. Asphalt can be used as part of an upstream face-protection system to counter wave energy or may be used as a sealing element, either on the upstream face or as a central core. The very low permeability and elastoplastic deformation characteristics of asphalt offer significant advantages to the designer under certain circumstances. The paper describes recent advances in practice and guidance on the use of asphalt for dam works.
