Describes the quality management experience of a large‐scale infrastructure construction project in Hong Kong. Though the importance of quality has long been realized in the Hong Kong construction industry since the Government announced that only ISO 9000 certified construction firms can tender for its projects. However, limited research work has studied the practical problems and obstacles of quality management in a real situation of an infrastructure project. In this paper, based on the findings from a questionnaire survey and data analysis of quality audits, the current problems of contractors’ quality management in an infrastructure construction project were identified, the causes of critical problems were investigated, and a model for managing contractors’ performance was developed.
