The effect of load and relative sliding velocity on the tribological properties of locomotive traction gear materials 42CrMo and 17CrNiMo6 was investigated on the basis of pin-on-disk reciprocating friction and wear test. The research showed that load and relative velocity had significant effect on the tribological properties of locomotive traction gear materials. The friction coefficient between friction surfaces decreased and then tended to be stable with increase of load and relative sliding velocity. The friction coefficient expression was put forward by regression analysis and significant test, which lays a theoretical basis for research on the tribological properties of locomotive traction gears. The correctness of the expression was verified by tests.
