In this paper, the authors report the synthesis of nanosize tin dioxide (SnO2) (40 nm) by nitrate eutectic melt. The chemical characterisation was made by using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopic techniques. SnO2 pellet was used for sensing humidity in 5–95% relative humidity. The observed sensing parameters had a sensitivity of 0·45, response time of 26 s and recovery time of 45 s. The adsorption behaviour of the moisture was investigated by measuring the change in mass. The sensing parameters were correlated with various film growth mechanisms.
