One of the major problems or uses of environmental geotechnics is the containment or isolation of waste products from the wider environment. The key processes are often intrinsically multiphysical and/or chemical, which require analysis to reduce possible human or environmental exposure. This paper presents an overview of waste barriers in environmental geotechnics with a focus on two main types, (i) radioactive waste barriers and (ii) municipal waste barriers.
