Dredging of the UK canal network is an imperative operation to maintain navigation and the ecological balance of the water course and to improve water quality to ensure that restoration works that have been carried out on the network since the 1960s continue to enrich the canal transport legacy for future generations. With this in mind, continual improvement and economic efficiencies are sought to ensure that more canal miles can be dredged to maintain and enhance the green corridors of Britain while providing value for money for each pound spent on canal maintenance. One such initiative is the innovative use of coastal dredging technology adapted for use on inland waterways in order to provide a system for specifically increasing production on spot dredging projects, resulting in a reduction in programme time and in turn increasing the number of miles dredged without an increase in expenditure.
