This issue presents a paper by Haupt (2024) focusing on how concrete was introduced to Norway during the period of 1912 to 1920. He explored the way concrete technology influenced the construction of industrial buildings and connected to broader architectural and engineering trends. This introduction of concrete led to new building systems characterised by heavy concrete bearing walls and steel-concrete hybrid structures. The latter was significant as it allowed for larger and more complex industrial structures. This paper showcases how Norwegian engineers and architects were influenced by developments in Europe and the USA and incorporated new materials and technologies into their designs, leading to advancements in building systems and construction techniques.
Looking back, when the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) established this journal in 2009, the aim was to chronicle the historic development of all disciplines within civil engineering and construction on a global scale. This global focus remains unchanged. This journal continues to serve communities of practice engineers and researchers, maintaining its relevance in the field, and will continue doing so during my tenure.
This journal migrated to Emerald publishing in 2023, broadening our readership pool and enhancing our reach. As the paradigm of journal and academic publishing shifts, we recognise that key indicators such as citations and impact factors have become more important than ever. We are committed to developing our journal to better serve our readers.
After five months serving as the Editor-in-Chief of this journal, it has become apparent to me that we are on the right track. I have seen many manuscripts from different parts of the world, which echoes this journal’s global scale. Our next steps are to publish more high-quality papers relevant to our readers and improve the efficiency and speed of peer review process.
