This volume of Engineering Sustainability reverts to type following the Special Issue on the BIONICS project. The first paper provides an insight into the issues that must be considered when addressing ‘carbon critical design’ and is topical since this subject formed the basis of workshop discussions at a recent ICE Learned Society Forum. It was stated that there would have to be a very major shift in thinking, and activity, as the industry moves to embrace ‘carbon critical design’ as its guiding principle.
