Ernst Friedrich ‘Fritz’ Schumacher (1911–1977) was born into an academic family in Bonn, Germany and won a Rhodes Scholarship to New College, Oxford in 1930. Following a brief return to Germany between 1934 and 1936 he settled in England and was interned as a German national for much of the war.
