Article Type: Editorial From: Journal of Facilities Management, Volume 12, Issue 3

With more than half of the world’s population living in cities, we are facing a growing demand for infrastructure services including energy, water, transport and public facilities. This accelerated demand is against a backdrop of complexities and challenges facing the infrastructure systems in the twenty-first century, namely, climate change impacts, lack of investment, operational inefficiencies and a growing stock of aged facilities.

Facilities management (FM) as a diverse and growing sector has a broad mission to manage support activities of an organization that could include the built asset management, maintenance and infrastructure services. With major economies still recovering from stringent financial conditions, the FM practices play a key role in improving the operational performance, administration productivity, resource efficiency and sustainability and resilience of infrastructure facilities. Capital intensity, network complexity and criticality of provided services are among the main issues arising in infrastructure FM.

This special issue on “Sustainable Infrastructure Management” presents seven original papers on addressing and investigating some of the above emerging challenges, complexities and issues in incorporating social, economical and environmental sustainability dimensions in infrastructure FM.
