FM looking to the future

Since the launch of JFM in 2002 the interest and enthusiasm from fellow authors, readers, researchers, and industry practitioners has been astonishing, and this is why JFM is now firmly cemented as a pivotal literary source within the field. At the forefront of JFM's strategic approach is the involvement of creative, vibrant, and emerging authors, whilst maintaining the core influx of experience and establishment.

To this, I am proud to introduce myself as the Editorial Assistant of JFM,to help take the journal into the future by further streamlining and enhancing the editorial process, coupled with the effective support and coordination to authors and reviewers. My background is primarily within research, and after gaining first class honours and master's qualifications, I worked for a major property group within Merseyside as a Research Analyst. This has provided me with the experience and expertise to hopefully play a vigorous role in the research input and performance within FM, and add value to its future prosperity. I am currently working as a Research Associate within the Property,Facilities, and Operations (FM) Research Group at Liverpool John Moores University.

As part of JFM's innovative practice, we seek to further improve and focus on the development of critical FM elements, in which we are looking for more papers on “performance measurement”. As Kincaid (1994) rightly acknowledges, “from the money supply to the golf score, measurements play a key role in determining our actions and influencing our behaviour”. Within the modern business environment, operations are bound by the incessant need to strategically compete and improve, and in the competitive information age the impact on service industries is the greatest (Kaplan and Norton, 1996). A discipline without the ability to measure performance fundamentally is one without improvement. The culmination of effective and efficient measurement within service areas is therefore vital, and is at the core of strategic FM.
