Engineers are faced with many challenges in contributing to the goal of achieving net zero. Whatever is done, designs must remain ‘safe’. This paper looks at how environmental changes may affect infrastructure safety, and it makes observations on the benefits to minimising embodied carbon if only rates of infrastructure failure can be reduced. The safety implications linked to popular design strategies are discussed.
