Repairs were required to a corroded post-tensioned prestressed-concrete continuous-girder bridge that had been in service for over 35 years in the Chuo Expressway in Japan. The work included reinforcing the bridge girders with external cables and partially replacing the bridge deck slab at intermediate piers. The load-carrying capacity of the existing bridge and reinforcement design for the replacement slab sections were based on a soundness assessment following detailed investigations. This paper describes the considerations for examining, planning and designing the replacement of large sections of slab on a post-tensioned, prestressed-concrete, continuous-girder bridge.
