Review of the XVIII European Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering

The XVIII European conference on soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering (XVIII ECSMGE 24) was held in Lisbon on 25–30 August 2024. It was hosted by the Portuguese Geotechnical Society (SPG), the Portuguese member society of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering. Portugal has a history of geotechnical engineering associations since 1951 and is the venue for the prestigious Manuel Rocha lecture. This paper briefly describes SPG’s history and activities and addresses XVIII ECSMGE 24’s plenary sessions, discussion sessions, and some key parts of the organization of the conference and workshops; it is expected that this information will be of value to organizers of future such events. The papers submitted to the XVIII ECSMGE 24 were reviewed by the European member societies and by a team of reviewers, and the proceedings were published by an international publisher and were sent for indexation to Scopus, WOS Clarivate, EI and Compendex. In addition to the conference proceedings, a conference report was published to keep the conference memories alive.
