This paper presents a strategy for modelling engineering structures, based on a systematic process that distinguishes between engineering, conceptual, and computational models. Acceptance criteria should be established during model development to ensure that effective tests of these models can be formulated. The software used to analyse computational models should be evaluated on the basis of internationally recognised characteristics and the integrity and reliability of hardware should not be taken for granted. The roles that people play in this process are identified and discussed.
