The A3 Hindhead scheme in the UK completes the missing dual carriageway link between London and Portsmouth and comprises the construction of 6·4 km of dual carriageway trunk road. As part of the 4·6 km of surface earthworks over 8000 soil nails were installed for both temporary and permanent works. The nailing was undertaken in the Hythe Beds for which limited precedent experience was available and raised site-specific design and construction issues. Due to the scale of the soil nailing, a large pre-construction trial was undertaken to address both design and construction-related issues. The results not only provided confidence in the design, but also invaluable information for construction to aid programming and help ensure high quality construction. This paper describes the trial extent, procedure and results of what could be the largest such trial undertaken in the UK.
