Correlation between estimated clay contents and hydrometer measurements

Estimated soil clay contents (P_0.002) obtained from consistency limits were evaluated by means of comparison with the results of the conventional hydrometer test (P_0.002h). In total, 180 soil samples were tested for Atterberg limits, linear shrinkage and clay content to generate the data used for statistical evaluation. It was found that there is a strong correlation between P_0.002 and P_0.002h, with realistic and valid statistical equality. However, the variability in P_0.002 estimations – up to 50% – is quite high for practical purposes. Nevertheless, the findings of the study confirm the credibility of the hydrometer method.
