Estimated soil clay contents (P0.002) obtained from consistency limits were evaluated by means of comparison with the results of the conventional hydrometer test (P0.002h). In total, 180 soil samples were tested for Atterberg limits, linear shrinkage and clay content to generate the data used for statistical evaluation. It was found that there is a strong correlation between P0.002 and P0.002h, with realistic and valid statistical equality. However, the variability in P0.002 estimations – up to 50% – is quite high for practical purposes. Nevertheless, the findings of the study confirm the credibility of the hydrometer method.
