Effective protection is critical for the safe and efficient construction of rockburst tunnels. This study investigates the dynamic response of flexible protection mesh through drop ball impact tests and numerical simulations. The results show that YB2000 flexible mesh (1 m2) can withstand impact energies of at least 10383 J. It was observed that impact velocity and kinetic energy exert a more pronounced influence on the dynamic response of flexible mesh than rock size or impact position. An X-shaped load transfer path emerges, with peak stress concentrating at anchorage points. Interception failure originates from the mesh damage at anchorage points, which is attributed to insufficient weaving tightness or inadequate binding yarn strength. These findings provide a basis for optimizing mesh impact resistance and inform rockburst mitigation strategies in tunnel engineering.
