High temperatures and impact loads significantly influence the fragmentation characteristics of rock. Impact compression tests, based on the coupled effect of different temperatures and different rates of impact load, were conducted on granite to study variations in dynamic fragment distribution, fractal dimension and dynamic failure shape. The different dynamic fragmentation characteristics displayed by granite under the coupled effect of high temperature and impact load were then examined. With rising temperature, the size of the granite fragments at the same rate of impact load demonstrated a trend of first increasing and then decreasing. The results also showed that high temperature has a significant effect on the fractal distribution of rock fragments while the combined effect of high temperature and impact load results in differences in the fragment distributions of rocks.
