Centrifuge tests were conducted to study the behaviour of embankments on soft clay foundations prepared with an overconsolidated crust over normally consolidated kaolin clay. Tests were performed with embankments constructed during flight in stages with measurements of pore pressures at selected locations and displacements using a marker grid. This Paper concentrates on two tests in the series. One test was performed with the clay foundation strengthened using granular columns; the other test had an untreated foundation. In the test using an untreated foundation the embankment failed at a height of 11·6 m. The strengthened foundation supported an embankment of 13 m without failure. Large lateral displacements were measured in unstrengthened clay during consolidation periods and it was found that large displacement increases are a good indicator of a factor of safetybelow about 1·3. At corresponding loadings the use of strengthened foundations decreased lateral and vertical movements by about 50%. Total stress and effective stress stability analyses were made for embankments on both unstrengthened and strengthened clayfoundations. In the latter case allowance was made for the strength of columns. It was found for the wide spacing of columns used that the increased pore pressure dissipation due to the presence of the columns had a much greater strengthening effect than any intrinsic strength of the columns themselves.

Des essais a centrifugeuse ont été effectués afin d'etudierle comportement de remblais sur des fondations d'argile molle préparées avec une croute surconsolidée au-dessus du kaolin normalement consolide. Au tours de la construction des remblais par étapes on a mesuré les pressions interstitielles à des lieux sélectiones et les déplacements a l'aide d'une grille de repére. L'article décrit notammentdeux essais de la série. Dans I'un des essais la fondation d'argile était renforcée par des colonnes pulvérulents, tandis que dans l'autre essai la fondation est restée sans traitement. Dans le cas de la fondation qui n'avait subi aucun traitement le remblai s'est affaissé a la hauteur de 13m. La fondation renforcee a supporté sans rupture un remblai de 13 m. De grands déplacements latéraux ont été enregistrés dans de l'argile non renforcée pendant des périodes de consolidation et on a decouvert que de grandes augmentations de déplacement indiquent clairement unfacteur de sécurité de moins de 1, 3 environ. A chargements analogues l'emploi de fondations renforcées a réduit les mouvements latéraux et verticaux d'environ 50%. Des analyses de stabilité sous des contraintes effectiveset totales ont ete effectuees pour des remblais sur des fondations d'argile sans etavec renforcement, en tenant compte de la résistance des colonnes dans ce derniercas. Pour l'espacement de colonnes considére on à trouve que l'accroissement de la dissipation de la pression interstitielle produisait un effet de renforcement qui était trés supérieur á la résistance intrinséque des colonnes elles-mêmes.
