Salt formations are considered to be suitable repository media since they are assumed to be impervious to fluids: rock salt has been selected in many countries for underground storage of hydrocarbons, and industrial and radioactive wastes.

Mechanical drilling disturbs the rock salt and leads to an increase of its permeability. This permeability associated with damage may induce significant hydromechanical coupled effects, which may make it difficult to assess the safety of the repository.
