The predicted hydrostatic state of saturated media changes from one theoretical model to another. These predictions are classified into two categories: those that predict a porosity-independent hydrostatic state, and those that predict a porosity- and porosity-gradient-dependent hydrostatic state. The outcome of both categories is probable, leading to a paradox. There is one hydrostatic state, but there are two contradictory predictions.
