Grain size distribution and grain shape are two factors that exert significant influence on the behaviour of an assemblage of particles, such as the maximum and minimum packing density and the angle of shearing resistance. One measure of grain shape is roundness, a localised measure of surface texture or roughness at its corners and edges. Roundness R was defined (Fig. 1) as the ratio of the radius of curvature of surface features, ri, to the radius of the largest inscribed circle, rmax, yielding the relation (Wadell, 1932
