With the object of investigating their effect on laboratory sedimented kaolin two polymeric hydroxy aluminium cations were introduced in solution into suspensions of kaolin. The two cations were of different sizes and a third suspension remained untreated for comparison. After consolidation, engineering tests were performed for classification and observation of consolidation and shearing behaviour. Shearing observations were repeated at different time intervals with a view to investigating the effect of ageing, and corresponding chemical analyses were performed for four phases in which it was anticipated the aluminium which had originally been introduced would be found. The four phases were free pore-water, adsorption phase containing exchangeable cations, amorphous growth, and quasi-crystalline growth. It is concluded that a quasi-Gibbsite growth developed rapidly in both treated sediments, resulting in rigid interparticle bonding and an increase in strength at 70 days of 125% in the case of the smaller cation and 50% in the case of the larger cation.
